The Most Honest Place On The Water

Updated: Jan 3

Let’s talk about a place where you dont realize the spot light is on you until you're in it. A place where any and all imperfections come out, and a place where bad communication can be a make or break for the entire day. The bow of a skiff.

Being a fishing guide here in Charleston, I've had the privilege of being a part of countless memories with anglers of all skill levels, some good, some bad. No matter what your fishing abilities are, keeping a few things in mind can make a massive difference for your next fishing trip. Honesty, communication, and never forget proper skiff etiquette.

  • Honesty

Be honest to your guide about your fishing abilities and skill level. Knowing what your strenths and weaknesses with casting helps us plan how and where to fish that day. Talking yourself up to your guide wont get you any brownie points when you cant meet the expectation you set for yourself. As a guide we want you to have a great time, knowing what you can and cant do is crucial information to make this happen.

  • Communication

Talk to your guide during the trip. If you can't see a fish or need the boat positioned in a different way, tell your guide. Make sure youre being heard, many times I have had a soft spoken client on the bow facing away from me telling me about a potential fish they are looking at, and I will have no idea.

  • Skiff etiquette

Fishing in the Charleston area can be extremely physically demanding. Your guide understands that standing and casting for a long period of time can be exhausting. Tell your guide if you need a break. We have no problem with staking out for a bit and letting you rest. Usually we could take a break as well. Which brings me to my next point. Sitting down on the bow or being locked in your phone while your guide is poling is a no no. From the poling platform we have a hard time seeing really close fish under the bow, so we rely on your eyes to spot fish in those areas. Overeager casting or excessive noise can spook fish. So make sure to Stow loose gear and equipment before we start fishing so you don't have a water bottle or a back pack fall over at the worst time.

Fishing with a guide is a team effort, It requires honesty, communication, and proper skiff etiquette. These are simple but very imprtant skills to keep in mind next time you fish with a guide. Remember, no one wants you to have a good time more than your guide!
